Indications/Uses
Patients w/ DM who require insulin for the maintenance of normal glucose homeostasis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
Should be taken with food: Administer shortly before or w/in 15 min after meals. 
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Do not administer IV. Transferring to another type or brand, changes in strength, species &/or method of manufacture of insulin. Less pronounced or different early warning symptoms of hypoglycemia in conditions including long duration of diabetes, intensified insulin therapy, diabetic nerve disease or medications (eg, β-blockers). Uncorrected hypoglycemic & hyperglycemic reactions. Inadequate use of dosages or discontinuation of treatment may lead to hyperglycemia & diabetic ketoacidosis especially in insulin-dependent diabetics. Insulin requirements may be increased during illness or emotional disturbances. Patients who undertake increased physical activity or change in the usual diet. Observe for signs & symptoms of heart failure, wt gain & edema if used in combination w/ pioglitazone; discontinue pioglitazone if any deterioration in cardiac symptoms occurs. Instruct patients to perform continuous rotation of the inj site to reduce the risk of developing lipodystrophy & cutaneous amyloidosis. Monitor blood glucose after the change in inj site & adjust dose of antidiabetics. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Renal & hepatic impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <12 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Local allergy. Redness, swelling & itching.
Drug Interactions
Insulin requirements may be increased w/ OCs, glucocorticoids, thyroid replacement therapy, danazol, β stimulants (eg, ritodrine, salbutamol, terbutaline); may be reduced w/ oral hypoglycemics, salicylates (eg, ASA), sulpha antibiotics, certain antidepressants (eg, MAOIs, SSRIs), certain ACE inhibitors (eg, captopril, enalapril), ARBs, β-blockers, octreotide or alcohol.
